42 days: drop the Lords vote

There was welcome news on Monday that the government now acknowledges that trying to force through the extension of detention powers for terrorist suspects by invoking the Parliament Act would be politically disastrous.

So what purpose would be served by putting the issue and suffering a massive defeat in the House of Lords next week? Let's hope new Lords leader Jan Royall succeeds in a bid to get the measure dropped before then.

With broad support for the government's handling of the economic crisis, reopening this divisive issue now would make little sense.
